If your lawn mower only runs with choke on after warming up, it may not be receiving enough fuel for the air entering the engine. Partly closing the choke enriches the mixture. An improvement is a useful clue, but it does not identify the failed part or prove that you need a replacement carburetor.

This guide covers gasoline mowers with carburetors. Needing choke briefly during a normal cold start is different from needing it throughout mowing. Follow your engine manual for warm-up and choke operation; automatic-choke systems do not have the same controls as manual-choke engines.

Before you inspect the mower

Park on level ground, switch the engine off, remove the key if fitted, and wait for the engine and muffler to cool. Disconnect and secure the spark-plug lead before hands-on inspection, following any additional isolation steps in the manual.

  • Handle gasoline outdoors, away from flames, sparks, smoking materials, and hot surfaces. Use an approved fuel container.

  • Do not operate the mower with a fuel leak, missing guards, or a loose fuel cap.

  • Do not bypass an interlock, change governor settings, or keep adding choke to finish mowing.

The checks below start with observations and accessible maintenance items. Opening fuel lines or dismantling a carburetor requires the exact service procedure and appropriate skills.

Use the symptom to choose where to start

Record what happened during normal operation; do not repeatedly run a faulty mower just to reproduce a symptom. This table suggests an inspection order, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Seven possible causes, from simple checks to service work:

1. Stale or contaminated gasoline

Start with the fuel’s history. Was it left in the mower over winter, or topped up from an old can? Fresh gasoline added to a tank of questionable fuel does not remove existing contamination.

Replace suspect fuel using the manual’s draining procedure. Briggs & Stratton says gasoline can begin deteriorating in as little as 30 days; its general fuel guidance specifies at least 87 AKI and no more than 10% ethanol, with separate high-altitude guidance. Use the requirements for your actual engine, and do not use E15 or E85 in an engine that does not approve them. Manufacturer fuel recommendations.

If the symptom remains with suitable fresh fuel, investigate delivery and metering rather than repeatedly adding fuel treatments.

2. A fuel shutoff valve that is not fully open

If your mower has a manual fuel valve, check its labeled operating position. A valve left closed after storage can prevent running; a partially closed or restricted valve can limit supply.

Use the markings and manual rather than assuming every lever works in the same direction. Do not force a stiff valve. Visible leakage or a damaged valve requires repair before restarting. Confirming fuel and valve position is part of Briggs & Stratton’s basic troubleshooting sequence.

3. A restricted fuel filter or damaged fuel line

With the engine off and cool, inspect accessible hoses for sharp bends, pinching, damage, and wet connections. If a filter was recently replaced, verify its part number and any marked flow direction.

Do not select a replacement solely because it fits the hose. The appropriate filter depends on the engine’s fuel-system design. A restricted filter can reduce fuel supply and cause lean, uneven running. 4. A blocked fuel-tank ventilation path

Fuel leaving the tank needs a way for air to replace it. A restricted vent can reduce delivery even when gasoline remains in the tank. Some engines use a vented cap; others have different venting arrangements.

Inspect the cap’s exterior and seal only after the engine has cooled. Follow the manual for any vent test or cleaning. 5. Deposits in the carburetor’s fuel passages

Deposits can restrict the passages that meter fuel into the engine. Adding choke may temporarily compensate for the resulting mixture problem. However, the symptom alone does not establish whether a main circuit, an idle circuit, or another part of the fuel path is responsible.

Before dismantling anything, inspect the air filter and accessible choke linkage as the manual allows. A clogged air filter commonly contributes to black smoke; it should not automatically be labeled the cause of a fuel-starvation problem. Do not run without the filter as a workaround. If internal cleaning is needed, use the exact service instructions or an authorized repairer. Do not spray flammable chemicals around a hot or running engine.

6. Restricted filling of a float-type carburetor bowl

On a float-bowl carburetor, the float and inlet needle regulate incoming fuel. A binding mechanism or obstructed inlet can prevent the bowl from replenishing correctly. A completely closed inlet may prevent sustained running altogether; choke cannot replace a missing fuel supply.

The useful distinction is between fuel reaching the carburetor inlet and fuel entering the bowl. Confirming that distinction requires a controlled, model-specific inspection. 7. An intake gasket or manifold leak

Air entering through a damaged intake seal can upset the mixture. This deserves attention when the problem began after carburetor removal, gasket replacement, or other intake work.

With the engine isolated and cool, look for an obviously displaced gasket, cracked intake connection, or loose mounting hardware. Appearance alone cannot rule out a leak. Use specified parts and tightening values; do not tighten fasteners harder as a substitute for diagnosis.

Clean, rebuild, or replace the carburetor?

Do not replace the carburetor solely because choke helps. First rule out unsuitable fuel and upstream restrictions.

Cleaning may be appropriate for removable deposits in a serviceable carburetor. Damaged or permanently obstructed parts may need replacement. Use approved cleaning products compatible with the components, and never enlarge calibrated openings with wire or drill bits. Confirm the result and know when to stop

Before restarting, reinstall the air cleaner, covers, guards, fuel cap, and connections. Check for leakage and restore the normal starting configuration exactly as the manual directs. Start outdoors from the operator position, keeping people clear.

After the prescribed warm-up, the mower should operate in its normal run setting without extra choke. If it still needs choke, leaks fuel, or runs erratically, stop and arrange diagnosis rather than making several adjustments at once.
