A lawn mower loses power in tall grass when the cutting system asks for more power than the mower can deliver, or when grass and debris restrict the deck, blade airflow, or engine air supply. The most common answer is not an internal engine failure. Tall, wet, or dense grass can overload even a healthy mower, especially when the deck is set low or configured for heavy mulching.

Safety first: Before inspecting the blade, underside of the deck, discharge opening, or belt area, stop the engine, wait for all moving parts to stop, disconnect the spark plug wire on a gas mower or unplug an electric mower, and follow the exact owner’s manual. The engine must keep the blade at working speed while the blade cuts, lifts, circulates, and discharges clippings. Tall grass creates more material for the blade to process.   1. Change the mowing approach first. Raise the deck, slow down, narrow the swath, and mow dry grass if possible.

  3. Inspect blade condition and installation. A worn or damaged blade cuts poorly and may disturb deck airflow.
  4. Check the engine’s basic maintenance items. Focus on the air filter, fuel condition, oil level, cooling areas, and spark plug according to the owner’s manual.
  5. Compare blade-engaged and blade-disengaged behavior. This helps identify whether the load is primarily in the deck or in the engine.
  6. Escalate unusual symptoms. Heavy vibration, metallic noise, smoke, repeated stalling, or a blade that will not turn normally calls for professional attention.

1. Reduce the cutting load before troubleshooting parts

Set the cutting height higher for the first pass. If grass has become unusually tall, make a second pass a few days later at the preferred height rather than trying to remove everything at once. Avoid taking off more than about one-third of the grass height in a single mowing where practical.

Slow the mower’s travel speed. For a self-propelled walk-behind mower, that can mean selecting a slower drive setting or briefly disengaging the drive so you can control the pace. For a riding mower, reduce ground speed while keeping engine speed at the manufacturer-recommended mowing setting. A fast travel pace feeds too much grass into the deck at once.

Also take a narrower pass. Overlap more than usual so the mower is cutting a smaller strip of tall grass rather than the full deck width. Do not mow wet, clumping grass if you can wait

Wet grass is a frequent reason a lawn mower deck gets packed with grass. It sticks to the deck shell, clumps around the discharge area, and can block the path clippings need to travel. Waiting until surface moisture has dried can make an immediate, noticeable difference in engine load and cut quality.

If mowing cannot wait, raise the deck, reduce travel speed, use a narrower swath, and stop to inspect for buildup as soon as the mower begins to labor. Do not keep forcing the mower through repeated stalls; that does not clear the restriction and can leave an uneven cut.

2. Check for a lawn mower deck packed with grass

A lawn mower deck packed with grass reduces the deck’s available volume. Instead of moving clippings smoothly, the blade has to churn a dense mass underneath the housing. That can make an otherwise healthy engine sound weak under load.

With the engine off and the ignition source safely disconnected, inspect the underside of the deck, discharge chute, grass bag opening, and any mulch plug or baffle area. Use a stick, brush, or another suitable non-hand tool to remove packed clippings.   • Look for thick, matted grass around the blade path.
  • Check whether the discharge opening is restricted by clippings.

3. Inspect the blade and deck airflow components

A sharp blade cuts grass cleanly with less tearing. A dull blade tends to shred rather than slice, which can worsen cut appearance and increase the amount of work happening under the deck. A bent, cracked, badly worn, or loose blade is more serious: it may create vibration, poor cutting, unsafe operation, and abnormal load.

Do not sharpen, straighten, or reinstall a blade unless you can follow the exact mower manual and have the right tools. Blade orientation, hardware condition, and tightening torque are model-specific. Signs the blade needs closer attention

  • Grass tips look torn or heavily frayed after mowing.

If the mower hit a rock, root, metal object, or buried debris, stop using it until you inspect it as directed by the manual. Do not attempt to bend a blade back into shape. Replace damaged parts or have an authorized service professional inspect the blade, adapter, spindle, crankshaft area, and deck.

4. Check engine airflow when the mower engine is weak under load

If the deck is clean and the mowing load has been reduced but the lawn mower engine is weak under load, inspect the air filter next. A dirty filter limits incoming air and can cause sluggish response, rough running, or a loss of power when the blade enters thick grass.

Remove and inspect the filter only with the engine off. Use the cleaning or replacement method specified for the exact filter type in the owner’s manual. Fuel, oil, and spark checks belong after the easy deck checks

Old fuel, incorrect fuel, a restricted fuel path, a fouled spark plug, or an incorrect oil level can contribute to a mower that slows down under load. These problems are more likely if the mower also surges, misfires, is difficult to start, loses power even with the blade disengaged, or runs poorly in short grass.

Use fresh fuel of the type and ethanol limit specified by the engine manufacturer. Check the oil level on level ground using the procedure in the manual; do not overfill. 5. Compare the symptoms with and without the blade engaged

This simple comparison can narrow the problem, but perform it only in a safe open area and according to the mower’s operating instructions.
